“WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT?”
‘What are you passionate about?’ We’ve been told these five words hold the key to a successful career and life purpose. Is it true?
Our society and especially social media, is full of passionate people. We see it everyday and everywhere. But I think we need to be careful with the word ‚passion’ and its meaning and how it make us feel. As this particular question also can trigger that you need to come up with a good answer. People can think there is something wrong with them, if they don’ t have a passion. They get stuck. It is how it feels: No passion, you’re stuck. You feel lost and you don’t know what to do.
Last couple of years, I always though I had a passion and I needed to have a passion in life. And since I do photography, it is easy to say I have a passion. But I also can say, it is true: ‚ if I don’t feel the passion, I get stuck.’ So it is important to know what passion is.
Actually, passion is a feeling. And as we know feelings come and go. You can be passionate about a person. About a job. About a hobby. But once that feeling change our passion change. So passion change while walking through life.
I didn’t know I was passionate about photography until I started with a simple digital camera. And after a while I got better and I even started to get successful and created my own business. This happened from passion that I didn’t know I had before. And even though people might think once you found your passion you will forever keep it…no! Because sometimes I don’t feel I want to be a photographer. I lose all my „passion“, and it confuses me a lot.
If I don’t have this passion, what then? But I learned it is okay to feel that way. And it is okay that passion change. I changed from shooting weddings to fashion, lately I feel more passionate about travel and sharing more personal things. Maybe in one year I have a passion in another sector. Who knows?
Passion is not a job, a hobby or a sport. Passion is full force of your attention and energy that you give what is right in front of you. I’m not always feel passionate about every shooting I have, but once I start, I get this feeling back. But if you not start, you won’t feel it. If you are so busy to look and wait for any passion to come, you could miss out opportunities. “Success feels passion, more then passion feels success.“
And if you don’t know what to do, you just start with something. Passion will follow as you discover new things in your life. You don’t need to know what you are doing or where you will be in 5 years. It is okay not to know. It is even nice not to know!
Because the most fulfilling careers and the most fulfilling relationships are those who still has the power to surprise you.
And about the things you know you wanna do: you wanna write a book one day; you want to start a business; you want to change careers; you want to travel… great! But if you stick around and waiting for the passion to show up and to take it, you are gonna wait a long time! So don’t wait. Instead spend your time in attention, to solve your favourite problems. Look for problems that needs solving. Be useful and generous. People will thank you, hug you and pay you for it. And that is where passion is, where your effort and energy meets someone else’s need. People can find passion in helping others.
To live a life full of meaning and value: you don’t follow your passion, your passion follows you.
